“China firmly supports Brazil in safeguarding its national sovereignty and national dignity, and opposes unwarranted external interference in Brazil’s internal affairs,” Wang said. He added that China also supports Brazil in defending its “development rights and interests” and in “resisting the bullying imposition of tariff measures.”
Wang’s comments came after US President Donald Trump imposed a 50% tariff on Brazilian imports, calling it a response to what he described as a “witch-hunt” against former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro. Bolsonaro is facing allegations of attempting to overturn the 2022 election results.Tensions escalated further when the US sanctioned Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes for his role in the investigation into the failed attempt to challenge the election outcome.
China also expressed its support for Brazil’s role within the BRICS group. Wang said Beijing “firmly supports Brazil in strengthening solidarity and cooperation among Global South countries through the BRICS mechanism,” and in promoting self-reliance among developing nations.
He concluded by stating that China is willing to work with Brazil to deepen bilateral cooperation and “effectively offset various external uncertainties” through the “stability and complementarity” of their partnership.
