The demonstrations organised by the grassroots movement follow similar protests during the ‘Hands Off’ rally on April 9. The rally was the largest single-day protest organised during Trump’s second term.
The 50501 Movement is also calling for demonstrations against Elon Musk and the cuts put in place by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). In addition, ‘Tesla Takedown’ events are planned in cities like Portland, Oregon, the USA Today reported.50501 Movement: All you need to know
Initially started on Reddit, 50501 Movement is a grassroots activist network that is built on decentralised mobilisation. It first came into prominence on February 5, with a nationwide protest days after Trump’s inauguration. Since then, the group has organised several peaceful anti-Trump demonstrations, including the ‘Hands Off’ rally on April 9. Millions across the country took to the streets during the ‘Hands Off ‘ protest.
As per 50501 Movement’s website, the organisation aims to show “that the American working class will not sit idly by as plutocrats rip apart their democratic institutions and civil liberties while undermining the rule of law.”
According to the Movement’s Substack page, the April 19 event will lend support to Americans who have lost their jobs, lost access to food (food stamps, pantries struggling to remain open), impacted by the stock market crashing due to tariff announcements and trying to meet increases in the cost of living.
Apart from protests, the events will include environmental clean-ups and donation drives. The 50501 Movement aims to create a ‘social support web’ for Americans as Donald Trump’s policies affect the lives of common people, especially those in marginalised communities.
The date of April 19 was chosen by the organisers in order to commemorate the anniversary of the Battle of Lexington and Concord, an event which took place during the American Revolutionary War in 1775, as “a historic reminder of resistance to tyranny.”
The Trump administration has come under sharp criticism for its policies over the last few months, including mass layoffs by DOGE at federal agencies, attempts to deport legal residents, reciprocal tariffs on most nations, including American allies and funding freezes for private universities for refusing to submit to increased oversight, the Washington Post reported.
