Cook’s comments come as Apple posted quarterly revenue of $124.3 billion for its fiscal 2025 first quarter, up 4% year-over-year.
India played a critical role in this growth, with Apple achieving a 39% annual increase in smartphone sales—the highest among top brands, according to research firm Canalys. For the first time, Apple entered the top five smartphone brands in the country, fueled by aggressive promotions and strong festive demand in the October-December 2024 quarter. It is now ranked as Apple’s fifth-largest market, behind Japan and the UK.
India, the world’s second-largest smartphone market, has been a focal point for Apple’s long-term growth strategy. The company now ranks among the top five smartphone brands in the country for the first time, following five consecutive years of rising local sales volumes.
Expanding local presence and enterprise adoption
In October 2024, Apple announced that the company would open four more retail stores in the country, expanding to cities like Pune and Bengaluru after Delhi NCR and Mumbai.
“There’s a huge market, and we have a very modest share in these markets, so I think there’s lots of upside there,” Cook said during the call in response to a question.
Beyond consumer sales, Apple’s enterprise adoption in India is growing. Senior Vice President and CFO Kevan Parekh highlighted that Zomato, a leading food delivery platform, has deployed thousands of Macs across its workforce to foster innovation.
Apple Intelligence and localisation efforts
Apple is also deepening its software localisation efforts, bringing Apple Intelligence to more languages in April, including localised English for India.
Currently, Apple Intelligence is not natively available for Indian users even after three months of launch with iOS 18.1.
