As solar market slumps in Europe, India looks to export modules to US, West Asia: Sources

Date:

With the solar market in Europe slumping due to a fall in electricity prices, India is looking to tap into new export opportunities in the United States and the West Asia, government sources told CNBC-TV18.They noted that continuous engagement is underway to address glitches in exports, and that India is also working closely with the US-India Business Council (USIBC) to advocate for the export of solar modules. However, sources added that a strong domestic market is limiting India’s dependence on exports. Clarity is still awaited on the US tariff structure, they said.

Meanwhile, the Alliance for American Solar Manufacturing and Trade, along with US-based module makers First Solar, Mission Solar Energy and Qcells, has filed anti-dumping and countervailing duty (AD/CVD) petitions with the US International Trade Commission (ITC) and the US Department of Commerce.

The US has already imposed anti-dumping duties on solar exports from Cambodia, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam.Government sources also shared India’s current solar manufacturing capacities — 91 GW for solar PV modules, 27 GW for solar cells, and 2.2 GW for wafers. With several PLI-backed players in the process of setting up more capacities, the government expects to see tangible results over the next two to three years. Also Read: China’s stealthy solar exports stay one step ahead of US tariffs(Edited by : Sheersh Kapoor)First Published: Jul 30, 2025 2:35 PM IST
