At SCO meet with Putin, PM Modi urges constructive efforts for peace in Ukraine

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday (September 1) urged Russian President Vladimir Putin to make constructive efforts for peace in Ukraine. He said India and Russia have been discussing ending the Ukraine conflict and hoped for an early solution.During a bilateral meeting with Putin, Modi said, “In the Ukraine conflict, we have been discussing it. We welcome peace efforts. We hope that all parties will proceed constructively. This is a calling of humanity. There is a need to find a way to end the conflict and establish permanent peace.”

The two leaders held a bilateral meeting after attending the 25th Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in China’s Tianjin. The meeting lasted for 50 minutes.

Modi said it is always a memorable experience to meet President Putin. “Indians are waiting for your visit in December,” he added.  Putin is set to travel to India in December for summit talks with Modi.India and Russia always moved forward shoulder-to-shoulder even in difficult times, Modi said.  He said close relations between India and Russia are significant for global peace, stability and prosperity.

Highlighting the historical depth of ties between both the nations, PM Modi said, “It is the depth and breadth of our special and privileged strategic partnership that India and Russia have stood together even in difficult times.”

“This is good not only for our people but also for global stability and peace,” the Prime Minister said.

During the meeting, Putin stressed the trust between the two nations. “We can say that our relationship is based on principles. There is multifaceted cooperation between us. Today’s meeting is another good opportunity to further strengthen our relations,” Putin said.
