At least 20 persons have died and six are missing as two provinces in Indonesia, including tourist hotspot Bali, reel under flash floods and landslides triggered by heavy rains since Monday (September 8).
The other affected island province is East Nusa Tenggara, located about 500 km east of Bali. AP reported that rescue efforts are underway. About 600 rescue workers, police, and soldiers have been deployed to search for the six missing individuals, as per reports.
National Disaster Mitigation Agency spokesperson Abdul Muhari said heavy rainfall caused floods in at least 120 neighbourhoods across nine cities and districts of Bali. Several of them were hit by landslides.
“Officers are still carrying out emergency response efforts such as searching for victims and managing floods and landslides that have impacted the public,” Muhari said in a statement.
On Wednesday (September 10), Suharyanto, Head of the National Disaster Mitigation Agency, announced that Bali is no longer at risk of flooding.
More than 500 people evacuated to temporary shelters like schools, village halls, and mosques, returned to their homes on Thursday after water levels in rivers receded.
However, in Bali’s capital, Denpasar, the streets remain covered in mud and debris, cars crammed, and sidewalks strewn with sandals, pots and pans and old photographs, as per AP.
