Bangladesh fighter jet crash toll reaches 32, sparks students protests

Date:

The death toll in the Bangladesh fighter jet crash has risen to 32, including 25 children. The F-7 BGI aircraft, a training fighter jet manufactured in China, experienced a “mechanical fault” moments after takeoff and crashed into a two-storey building of Milestone School and College in Dhaka’s Uttara area on July 21.The Chief Adviser’s special adviser, Saidur Rahman, told the media that a pilot and a teacher were among the dead.
The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the media wing of the military, said over 160 people were injured and are undergoing treatment at 10 hospitals. The toll is expected to rise as some of the injured were reportedly in critical condition.
The Bangladesh Air Force has formed a high-level investigation committee to determine the cause of the accident.Meanwhile, protests have erupted in Bangladesh with hundreds of students demanding the “accurate” disclosure of the information about those killed, compensation for victims’ families, and the immediate discontinuation of outdated and unsafe training aircraft used by the Air Force.

Their demands included a complete list of the injured; a public apology for the assault on teachers by army personnel at the crash site, and reforms in Air Force training procedures to ensure safety.

Hundreds of students also besieged the Bangladesh Secretariat complex in Dhaka, and security forces used batons and fired tear gas to disperse them. Reports said around 40 people were injured in the protest. The students also blocked a major highway connecting the southwestern river port city Barishal with the rest of Bangladesh and main thoroughfares at the southeastern seaport city of Chattogram.

India to send burn-specialist doctors

India will send a team of burn-specialist doctors and nurses to Dhaka to treat those injured.

“A team of burn-specialist Doctors and Nurses with necessary medical support are scheduled to visit Dhaka shortly to treat the victims,” the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said.

“They will make an assessment of the condition of patients with recommendation for further treatment and specialised care in India as necessary,” it said in a statement.

The MEA said additional medical teams may also follow depending on their preliminary assessment and treatment.
