Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has appealed his recent conviction by the Supreme Court that sentenced him to more than 27 years in prison for a failed coup attempt following his narrow 2022 reelection loss.In the appeal, Bolsonaro’s lawyers ask the high court to review the ruling and reduce his sentence, alleging “profound injustices.” The 85-page appeal also accuses the Supreme Court of so-called document dumping, saying it didn’t give the lawyers enough time to prepare their client’s defence.Last month, the far-right Bolsonaro and seven other allies were found guilty of attempting a military coup in early 2023 that included plans to assassinate President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, his vice president and a Supreme Court judge.
Bolsonaro’s trial triggered a rapid deterioration in US-Brazil relations after President Donald Trump announced 50% tariffs on many Brazilian goods, in addition to other US sanctions and visa cancellations, in a bid to get the court to drop the charges. The two largest nations in the Americas are now working on mending ties, with Lula, as Brazil’s leftist leader is widely known, saying he expects a “definitive solution” to the trade spat soon, following an in-person meeting with Trump on Sunday.Read Also: Hurricane Melissa nears Jamaica as island’s worst-ever storm
