BRICS Foreign Ministers meet in New York, back India’s 2026 chairship, condemn terrorism and trade restrictions

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar hosted a meeting of BRICS Foreign Ministers in New York on the margins of the 80th UN General Assembly, where the grouping projected itself as a voice of stability in a turbulent world.The Ministers underlined that BRICS must reinforce peacebuilding, dialogue, diplomacy and adherence to international law, particularly at a time when multilateralism is under stress. They also made a strong pitch for the comprehensive reform of the United Nations, especially the Security Council, reiterating support for the aspirations of India and Brazil to assume a larger role.

In a significant political endorsement, the Ministers extended full support to India’s upcoming BRICS Chairship in 2026, when it will host the XVIII BRICS Summit.

The joint media statement carried strong positions on pressing global issues:

• Terrorism: Condemning terrorism “in all its forms and manifestations,” the Ministers specifically referenced the April 22 Jammu and Kashmir attack, urging zero tolerance and rejecting double standards in counterterrorism.
• Israel-Qatar Conflict: They condemned Israel’s recent attack on Qatar, calling it a breach of sovereignty and international law, and a threat to global peace.
• Middle East Crises: They emphasised that regional conflicts in West Asia and North Africa must be resolved only through political and diplomatic dialogue.
• Trade Disruptions: The Ministers voiced concern over rising tariffs, non-tariff measures and protectionism, warning that such actions disrupt supply chains and create uncertainty in global markets.

Looking ahead, the grouping identified technology, innovation, food and energy security, climate change, startups and sustainable development as key areas of cooperation. They welcomed the BRICS Startup Knowledge Hub launched by India, and supported initiatives such as the International Big Cats Alliance for wildlife conservation.Jaishankar noted that “when multilateralism is under stress, BRICS has stood firm as a strong voice of reason and constructive change.”

The discussions signal an intent to consolidate BRICS’ role as a counterweight to Western-led institutions, particularly on issues of governance, trade, and regional security.
