China on Thursday denied any ongoing trade negotiations with the United States, pushing back against recent suggestions from the White House of a possible thaw in their economic standoff.“There are absolutely no discussions on economic and trade matters between China and the US at the moment,” spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Commerce, He Yadong said. He dismissed any reports of progress in bilateral talks, calling them unfounded.
He added, “If the US genuinely wants to resolve this issue, it should first remove all its unilateral sanctions on China.”
The statement comes after US President Donald Trump and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent hinted earlier this week at a potential easing of tensions. The White House recently imposed steep tariffs on Chinese imports, prompting swift retaliation from Beijing, which slapped duties on US goods and tightened controls on exports of key minerals.
