The recommendations come as he was hosting foreign ministers of the 10 members, including, India’s S Jaishankar, in China’s Tianjin for SCO Council Foreign Ministers’ (CFM) meeting.
“Wang Yi put forward five suggestions for the future development of the SCO: In the future journey, member states should further carry forward the “Shanghai Spirit”, enhance the cohesion, action and appeal of the organisation, do a good job and achieve success, and build the SCO into a model of mutual respect, fairness, justice, and win-win cooperation,” the Chinese Foreign Ministry said in a statement, as per ANI.
“Second, we should share the responsibility of safety and security and lay a solid foundation for security. Third, mutual benefit and win-win results drive the development engine. Fourth, be friendly and good neighbours and build a beautiful home together. Fifth, we must stick to the right path and defend fairness and justice…” it added.

The summit was announced shortly after the conclusion of SCO FM meeting where Wang Yi emphasised strengthening the SCO grouping and being “good neighbours” to each other amid rising protectionism.
“The world is becoming more multipolar and economic globalisation is deepening, and the global South is growing significantly. At the same time, hegemony and power are going against the trend, protectionism is surging, and regional conflicts are emerging one after another,” he said.
Chinese President Xi Jinping had also called for improving mechanisms to address security threats and challenges during a meeting with foreign ministers of SCO.
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, Pakistan Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and Iran’s FM Seyed Abbas Araghchi were among those who attended the meeting. The SCO comprises of India, China, Russia, Pakistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Iran and Belarus.
S Jaishankar on July 15 highlighted the founding objectives of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) at the CFM meeting and urged member states to take an “uncompromising position” against terrorism while staying true to the organisation’s principles.

Jaishankar stated that the three evils SCO was founded to combat are terrorism, separatism, and extremism. “Not surprisingly, they often occur together,” he said on X. He also highlighted the “disorder in the international system” with growing conflicts, competition, coercion, and economic instability, and urged for the mitigation of these challenges.
Last month, India refused to sign a joint statement of the SCO defence ministers’ meeting after mentions of terror attack in Pahalgam was removed while retaining mentions of such activities in Pakistan’s Balochistan.
At the time, Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh took a swipe at Pakistan saying perpetrators, financiers and sponsors of terrorism must be held accountable and there should be “no double” standards in combating the menace.
