Voters in Virginia and New Jersey identified the economy, jobs and inflation as their top concerns, with many signalling frustration that Trump’s promise of economic turnaround has not materialised.
The results suggest the Republican strategy of closely aligning with Trump may be politically costly in mid-term contests when economic pressures weigh on households.
Analysts interpret this as a referendum on Trump’s leadership and the GOP’s embrace of his agenda. Despite the former president formally endorsing several candidates, his absence from the campaign trail and the clear voter shift reflect mounting headwinds for Republicans heading into the 2026 midterms.
