Donald Trump announces fresh tariffs on six nations, 30% on Iraq, Libya and Algeria

US President Donald Trump on Wednesday introduced new tariffs of up to 30% on goods from countries including Libya, Iraq, and Algeria. The announcement was made on Trump’s Truth Social platform through letters addressed to each country, outlining the specific tariff rates.This move follows earlier notifications issued to 14 countries, in which Trump accused them of contributing to trade deficits and obstructing US exports. With the latest batch, the number of countries targeted under the administration’s tariff campaign has risen to 20.

Countries impacted and tariff rates:
Algeria: 30%Iraq: 30%

Libya: 30%

Philippines: 20%

Brunei: 25%

Moldova: 25%

Other countries receiving tariff letters

Other countries that received tariff letters include Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, Bangladesh, Serbia, Indonesia, South Africa, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Malaysia, Tunisia, Japan, South Korea, and Kazakhstan.

At a cabinet meeting on Tuesday, Trump stated, “a letter means a deal.” He also confirmed that the new tariffs would take effect on August 1, 2025, and there would be no postponements.

“As per letters sent to various countries yesterday, in addition to letters that will be sent today, tomorrow, and for the next short period of time, TARIFFS WILL START BEING PAID ON AUGUST 1, 2025. There has been no change to this date, and there will be no change. In other words, all money will be due and payable starting AUGUST 1, 2025 – No extensions will be granted. Thank you for your attention to this matter!” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
