While some found the image hilarious, several others accused Trump of mocking the late Pope.A user said that they believed the post was shared by a meme page. While another one said it was wrong of an official government-run social media account, which represents the US, to mock any religion.
They said the Trump administration has barely displayed Christian values or actions since returning to office and termed the post as “incredibly embarrassing”.
A third user said that the post was inappropriate and insensitive. Someone also said that it was neither satire nor harmless. Another comment highlighted that the AI-generated image showed Trump’s hubris.
“Donald Trump dressed as the Pope is an intentional visual crafted to project divinity, moral authority, and absolute power. It’s the aesthetic of a man who doesn’t want to lead a democracy,” a comment read.
Meanwhile, South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham responded to Trump’s remarks with a tongue-in-cheek post on X, advising Catholics to maintain an open mind regarding the possibility of the US President becoming Pope, according to reports.
The controversy followed Trump’s recent remarks during a press conference where he was questioned about who should be named Pope Francis’ successor.
According to reports, the US President commented that he wanted to become the next Pope. Denying that he had any preference, he mentioned the Cardinal of New York was “very good”.
He also faced criticism for violating the dress code and wearing a blue suit during Pope Francis’ funeral.
