Earthquake of 6.5 magnitude strikes Indonesia’s Tanimbar Islands Region, no tsunami warning issued

An earthquake of 6.5 magnitude recorded on the Richter Scale struck Indonesia’s Tanimbar Island regions on Monday (July 14).The tremors hit the islands at around 11:20 am IST and the depth of the earthquake is located around 110 km below the surface, as per National Centre for Seismology (NCS).
No tsunami warnings have been issued by the Indonesian authorities as of yet.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS), however, estimates the earthquake’s magnitude to be of 6.7.No immediate damage have been reported as of yet, and the government is said to be monitoring the situation, as per News18.

Tanimbar Islands are a part of Indonesia’s Maluku province which comprises over 30 islands located in its eastern part in the Arafura Sea between Timor and New Guinea, as per News18.

In January 2023, a massive earthquake of 7.6 magnitude had struck near the Tanimbar Islands which prompted the authorities to issue a tsunami alert for several hours.

The earthquake caused damages to at least 15 houses and two school buildings, as per News18. However, no casualties were reported.
