This is concerning, particularly coming on the heels of already growing worries around inadequate rainfall in Europe, given that more than half of cereals grown in the EU are wheat. In May, a European Commission (EC) report said that March 2025 was the driest March ever recorded in Germany.

The European Drought Observatory’s (EDO) latest report points to rapidly intensifying drought conditions in the Central and Eastern parts of Europe that will impact crops and vegetation. During the first 10 days in June, the temperatures remained above the seasonal average in most of southern Europe with some heatwaves in the Iberian Peninsula, southern Italy and south-eastern Europe.
