FIIs dump ₹11,639 crore in Indian equities on Friday, accounting for over 50% of weekly outflows

Date:

Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) pulled out ₹11,639 crore in Indian equities on Friday, accounting for more than half of the total sell-off recorded for the week. The total foreign outflows this week amounted to ₹22,011.38 crore, with FIIs selling shares on all four trading days. While the foreign investor sell-off initially began due to stretched valuations and concerns over slowing economic growth, it intensified today because of a sharp sell-off in the United States (US) markets and heightened concerns over potential trade tariffs from US President Donald Trump targeting Mexico and Canada.

On Thursday night, the Nasdaq fell over 550 points, and although the Dow Jones ended 200 points lower, it corrected over 650 points from the sessions’ highs. The fall in the Nasdaq today was triggered by a 8.5% drop in shares of Nvidia post its earnings. The Nasdaq sell-off has rubbed-off on the Nifty IT index, which is the top sectoral loser in today’s trading session, declining as much as 4%.

Adding to the investor worries were Trump’s renewed threats, particularly targeting Mexico and Canada – key trade partners of the US, of a 25% reciprocal tariff rate. This rekindled fears of a trade war and its potential impact on global supply chains. Trump’s stance on imposing tariffs on these neighbouring countries raised alarms among investors, particularly in industries reliant on cross-border trade. Also Read: Big reasons why foreign investors are pulling money out of Indian stocks

As a result of this, FIIs offloaded a substantial amount of Indian stocks, with  several sectors in the Nifty facing broad-based declines. On Friday, FIIs sold a net of ₹11,639.02 crores in equities, while DIIs bought ₹12,308.63 crore, more than offsetting the losses. The cumulative DII net buy value is ₹22,252.17 crore for this week.
