Flashback Jeffrey Epstein as Trump-Musk show turns spotlight back on dead sex convict

Date:

US President Donald Trump and billionaire Elon Musk are battling it out in full public glare with no apparent reconciliation in sight. As the two squabbled over Trump’s “Big, Beautiful Bill,” Musk pulled out a name from the annals of US criminal history — Jeffrey Epstein, the late convicted sex offender — to prove a point.Musk, in a post on X, alleged that Trump’s name was there in the Epstein files, which he said is the reason they had not been made public.

Who is Jeffrey Epstein?

Epstein was born on January 20, 1953, in New York, US, to Pauline Stolofsky and Seymour George Epstein. He graduated from Lafayette High School in 1969 after skipping two grades. He studied physics and mathematics at a university but left without receiving a degree.

Epstein began teaching at a school where he allegedly behaved inappropriately toward female students who were underage at the time, giving them constant attention and even attending a party of youngsters. He was fired later in 1976 for poor performance, then went on to work for Bear Stearns before launching his own financial company.

He used his wealth to purchase luxury properties, such as a ranch in New Mexico, a mansion in Florida, and what was regarded as the biggest private residence in New York City. Additionally, Epstein had ties with powerful US politicians Donald Trump and Bill Clinton, royalty (Britain’s Prince Andrew), and  socialites like Ghislaine Maxwell, the daughter of publisher Robert Maxwell, among numerous others.

The billionaire was first arrested in 2005 after a 14-year-old girl alleged she was sexually abused at his home in Palm Beach. Despite evidence from more than 30 alleged victims, Epstein was not charged with serious federal crimes at that time. But in 2008, several women came forward and complained of sexual abuse. Subsequently, he pleaded guilty but spent only 13 months in jail and was allowed to leave during the day.

He was later arrested in 2019 on new charges of sex trafficking and exploitation of minor girls by running a racket that recruited underage girls. However, a month later, he died by suicide in his New York Jail cell.

Did Trump know Epstein?

In the middle of the now-unravelling feud, Musk shared a 1992 clip of a “calendar girl” competition at the Mar-a-Lago estate. The video shows Epstein and Trump pointing out women on the dance floor.

Trump also reportedly flew on Epstein’s private jet in the 1990s, primarily between Florida and New York, according to the documents released in the case related to Ghislaine Maxwell. She was Epstein’s heiress, now serving 20 years in prison for helping him target and sexually abuse young girls and women.

In a 2002 interview with New York magazine, Trump said he knew Epstein for 15 years, calling him a “terrific guy,” adding he was a “lot of fun to be with.”

But he distanced himself from the sex offender when he was arrested again in 2019.

“I don’t think I have spoken with him for 15 years. I was not a fan,” he said at the time.
