GAIL signs MoU with Cummins for clean energy projects and transition to green technology

State-owned GAIL(India) Ltd and Accelera by Cummins, the zero-emissions segment of Cummins Inc., have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on clean energy and energy transition technologies in India.

The agreement was officially signed during the ongoing India Energy Week 2025 in New Delhi, GAIL said in a stock exchange filing.

This collaboration aims to leverage Accelera’s expertise in new energy solutions and GAIL’s well-established natural gas infrastructure to explore various opportunities in green energy, including hydrogen production, blending, transportation, and storage, the state-owned energy company informed the bourses.

With GAIL, a leading Maharatna CPSE under the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, advancing its “net zero” targets from 2040 to 2035, this partnership signifies a major step forward in India’s energy transition efforts.Cummins Inc’s broad portfolio of products includes advanced powertrains, electric and hybrid solutions, electric power generation systems, batteries, hydrogen production technologies, and fuel cells.

GAIL has long been at the forefront of clean energy initiatives. In April 2024, the company commissioned a 10 MW Green Hydrogen unit at its Vijaipur plant in Guna District, Madhya Pradesh, with the electrolyzer supplied by Accelera by Cummins.Additionally, GAIL has conducted successful pilot studies blending hydrogen in CNG/PNG networks, with plans to scale this up further.

The company has also set up a 5 TPD Compressed Biogas (CBG) plant in Ranchi, with plans for 26 more plants across India in the next 3-4 years.

In partnership with Leafiniti Bioenergy, GAIL aims to establish 10 CBG plants and is also collaborating with Coal India to produce Synthetic Natural Gas in West Bengal. The PSU also recently entered into a joint venture to build a 1G, 500 KLPD grain-based ethanol plant in Rajasthan.

Shares of GAIL were trading flat at ₹162.3 apiece, down 0.06%, on the BSE at 11:32 am.
