Concepts Debut: Genesis, the luxury vehicle division of Hyundai, revealed two new concept vehicles at the Seoul Mobility Show on April 7, 2025. The event, a major gathering for the automotive industry, showcased the X Gran Coupe and X Gran Convertible. These concepts are built using the Genesis G90 sedan, a model known as the brand’s top offering for its blend of comfort and power.

Lineup Expansion: The X Gran Coupe and X Gran Convertible introduce fresh designs that suggest Genesis plans to grow its collection of vehicles. This move points to the company’s goal of providing more choices for buyers in the luxury car market.

Anniversary Milestone: The unveiling celebrates Genesis’ 10th anniversary, marking a decade since the brand began. In that time, Genesis has sold over 1.3 million vehicles worldwide, showing its rise as a key name in luxury cars.

Platform Shared: Both concepts use the G90’s short-wheelbase platform, meaning they are designed with a shorter distance between the front and rear wheels. This setup focuses on making the vehicles quick and responsive while keeping the luxury features Genesis is known for.

Engine Details: Powering the X Gran Coupe and X Gran Convertible is a 3.5-litre V6 engine that delivers 415 horsepower. It includes a mild-hybrid system, which combines a traditional engine with electric support to improve fuel efficiency without reducing performance. Early rumours suggested these might be fully electric, but Genesis chose this hybrid option instead.

Design Highlights: The exterior design stands out with twin-lightbar elements, a feature seen on other Genesis models, placed at the front and back. These horizontal light strips create a unique look and tie the concepts to the brand’s identity. A crest grille with a 3D diamond-shaped mesh pattern sits at the front, giving the vehicles a refined appearance.

Interior Features: Inside, the concepts offer a high-end experience. Crystal accents appear on the steering wheel, air vents, and centre console, adding elegance. The cabin also includes aluminium-spoked steering wheels, micro-perforated olive wood, and quilted leather roofs. The X Gran Convertible has a cloth roof and a grape-coloured interior and exterior, setting it apart from the Coupe.

Concept Series: These two concepts join earlier Genesis prototypes, including the New York, GV80, Essentia, and Mint models, making them the fifth and sixth in the series. They reflect Genesis’ aim to build grand tourers—vehicles designed for long-distance driving—that combine luxury with sustainability. The twin-lightbar design, referred to as Two Lines, remains a consistent theme across these concepts.

GMR-001 Hypercar First Look: Genesis recently provided a first look at the GMR-001 Hypercar, a separate project from the X Gran concepts. Unveiled as a prototype for endurance racing, it will compete in the 2026 World Endurance Championship. Built with a turbocharged V8 from Hyundai’s rally program, the GMR-001 targets Le Mans glory.

India Plans: Genesis is also exploring new opportunities beyond these concepts. Hyundai, its parent company, is looking into bringing Genesis to India, possibly starting with an SUV like the GV80. This step would place Genesis in competition with well-known luxury brands like Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and Audi, which already operate in India.
