The detention of three German nationals by authorities in the US highlighted the stricter immigration enforcement under President Donald Trump, who has announced various immigration-related executive orders since assuming charge on January 20.
Two of three cases of Germans being detained were resolved as of Wednesday, while one was being handled with assistance from the consulate general in Boston.
The ministry clarified that neither approval through the US ESTA system nor a US visa ensures entry in every case, Reuters reported.According to a spokesperson, the final decision remains with US border authorities on whether someone can enter the country. The spokesperson stressed that this update didn’t constitute a travel warning.
The change is likely a response to several immigration-related executive orders announced by President Donald Trump since taking office. These directives centre on stricter border policy, more stringent visa requirements and a campaign against undocumented immigrants in the US.
Earlier this week, Germany’s foreign ministry said that it was monitoring whether there’s been a shift in US immigration policy after three German nationals were detained.
Two of the cases have been resolved, with the individuals returning to Germany, while the third case is being handled with the help of the consulate general in Boston.
As per Boston-based public broadcaster WGBH, a German man with a green card residency permit was detained at Boston airport and held in a detention facility, but the German foreign ministry hasn’t provided updates on his current whereabouts.
