The government has strongly condemned social media platform X for terming the Sahyog Portal a “censorship portal,” calling the claim unfortunate and groundless. Officials stated that X’s portrayal of the initiative misrepresents its purpose and raises unnecessary concerns about censorship.
The government clarified that the Sahyog Portal is designed to facilitate compliance with legal directives and ensure accountability in content moderation. It criticised X for seeking “blanket safe harbour protection without any responsibility,” arguing that such a demand is fundamentally flawed.
Officials reiterated that safe harbour protection does not grant X the authority to remove user content at its discretion while shielding itself from regulatory oversight. They emphasised that safe harbour is a conditional protection, available only after due diligence, and does not empower the platform to override legal takedown orders.
The government also asserted that X has no legal standing to challenge takedown orders on behalf of its users. It maintained that compliance with content regulations is essential and that platforms must adhere to established legal frameworks rather than resist accountability.
