An increase in the generation of e-way bills reflects an improvement in the economy. E-way bills in January 2025 were 23.1% more than a year earlier, and 5.5% more than the preceding month. GST collections rose 12.3% on year to ₹1.96 trillion in January.

Two significant changes in the rules took effect in January. Transporters can no longer generate e-way bills for base documents that are older than 180 days, to curb the backdating of invoices.Similarly, starting January 1, 2025, the total extension period for an e-way bill was capped at 360 days from the original generation date. This aims to prevent indefinite extensions and transit periods.Read more: Multi-factor authentication to be made mandatory for all GST assesses from April 1, 2025(Edited by : Sriram Iyer)
