‘Have respect for PM Modi, going to do a trade deal with India,’ US Prez Trump at APEC Summit

Date:

United States President Donald Trump said he has “great respect” for Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and a trade deal between the US and India is going to happen soon.Addressing the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit in South Korea on Wednesday, October 29, Trump reiterated the claim that he played a role in ending the war between India and Pakistan and used trade as a measure to stop the conflict.”If you look at India and Pakistan. So, I am doing a trade deal with India, and I have great respect and love for Prime Minister Modi. We have a great relationship,” he said. “Likewise, the Prime Minister of Pakistan is a great guy and the Field Marshal (Asim Munir)… is a great guy too.”

“So, I know them all, and I am reading that seven planes were shot down. They’re going at it, and it’s a big thing. They’re two nuclear nations and they’re really going at it,” Trump said, adding that he called PM Modi and said, “We can’t make a trade deal with you.”According to Trump, PM Modi replied, “No, no. We must make a trade deal.” And Trump reiterated, “We can’t. You’re starting a war with Pakistan, we’re not going to do it.””Then I called Pakistan and said, ‘We’re not going to trade with you because you’re fighting with India’,” the US President added. The two nuclear nations said, “No, no, no. You should let us fight.” They both said that, Trump remarked. The 250% tariffs threatTrump further said he threatened to impose 250%  tariff rates on India and Pakistan and would stop doing business with both countries, while also calling PM Modi a “tough” and “killer” guy.”They have strong people… Prime Minister Modi is the nicest looking guy. He’s as old… He looks like you’d like to have your father like. But he is a killer. He is tough as hell.””He said, ‘No, we will fight.’ I said, ‘Whoa, this is the same man that I know?'” Trump said, adding that “after literally two days” both nations called up and they said ‘we understand’ and stopped fighting.”How amazing is that. You think Biden would have done that? I don’t think so. Most people wouldn’t have thought of it. But here we are, we’re doing deals. So you add an ‘extra sense’ and say you have to stop shooting at each other. You have to stop the war.”Trump added that he threatened 250% tariffs on India and Pakistan if they didn’t stop the war.”I said I was going to put 250% tariffs on each country, which means that you’ll never do business. There’s nothing that you can sell for 250%. That’s a nice way of saying, ‘We don’t want to do business with you.’ You don’t have to say, ‘We don’t want to do business.’ That’s nasty.””They understood that, and within 48 hours we had no war, no people killed. It makes me feel so good. We saved millions of lives.”Trade used to create peace, says TrumpTrump said he stopped eight wars in eight months, but the only one that is left is Russia-Ukraine war. “That will get done too.””I thought that was going to be an easy one because of my relations with Russian President Putin, but it turned out to be different. I think it’ll get done. However, that wouldn’t have ever started if I were a president (at that time),” Trump said.”We’ve used trade to create peace in a lot of different locations (around the world),” he added.
