Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva conferred the country’s highest civillian honour ‘The Grand Collar of the National Order of the Southern Cross’ to Modi for his effort in deepening bilateral ties between the two countries. The conferment marks the 26th international honour bestowed upon PM Modi by a foreign government since he assumed office in May 2014, according to PTI.

The Prime Minister thanked President Silva as well as the government and the people of Brazil for bestowing the highest national honour which he said is a moment of pride for 140 crore Indians. “We want India-Brazil relations to be as colourful as carnival, as passionate as football,” Modi said on improving people-to-people ties and trade relations between the two countries.

Leaders of both countries have set a target of conducting $20 billion worth of trade in the next five years and inked six agreements in areas such as clean energy, sustainable development, climate solutions, defence, security, AI and agriculture, among others.

Both leaders have also reaffirmed their stand on zero-tolerance and double standards towards terrorism, following a strong condemnation the Pahalgam terror attack from the BRICS grouping. “We have a similar thinking on the fight against terrorism — zero tolerance and zero double standards. We are clear that there is no place for double standards on terrorism,” the prime minister said in his media statement.

After completing his Brazil visit, PM Modi landed in Namibia’s capital Windhoek on Wednesday (July 9) morning. The state visit to Namibia marks the final leg of his five-nation visit from July 2 to July 9. He will meet Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, President of Namibia to boost bilateral cooperation and address the Namibian Parliament.

The Indian diaspora in the African country showed up to welcome PM Modi in his first ever visit to Namibia as well as the third by an Indian Prime Minister to the country. Modi said he is “extremely optimistic about closer India-Namibia friendship” and proud of the Indian diaspora for having stayed true to their culture and traditions.
