India may send trade team to US as Trump reaffirms August 1 tariff deadline: Sources

Date:

India’s trade negotiating team is expected to visit Washington in the coming days to resolve key issues in the proposed bilateral trade deal, sources told CNBC-TV18. This comes as US President Donald Trump reiterated that new tariffs on imports from 14 countries, including India, will take effect on August 1, 2025, with no extensions. The extended deadline, originally July 9, gives India a narrow window to finalise terms and avoid steep tariffs that could impact key export sectors like textiles, pharmaceuticals, and auto parts.

President Trump ramped up his tariff threats with a post on Truth Social, saying there will be no extensions and that money will be due and payable starting Aug. 1.”There has been no change to this date, and there will be no change,” Trump wrote. “In other words, all money will be due and payable starting AUGUST 1, 2025 – No extensions will be granted.”

Trump’s renewed firmness on that deadline came after he posted a flurry of letters warning world leaders, threatening to impose tariffs similar to those he announced in April.

On Monday, Trump posted 14 letters from countries, including South Africa, Malaysia, and Thailand, outlining tariffs ranging from 25% to 40%.

While India and the US are reportedly close to a limited trade agreement, sticking points remain—particularly around agriculture, dairy, and digital trade.
