In a notification circulated by the Committee on Safeguards on May 24, addressed to WTO members by Indonesia, concerns have been raised about a serious threat to domestic industries producing cotton yarn, thereby proposing safeguard measures against its imports.India has objected to Indonesia’s proposed import control on cotton yarn at the World Trade Organization (WTO). In the communication filed at the WTO, India has sought consultation with Indonesia as per WTO rules on the extension of safeguard measures by its south-east Asian neighbour on imports of cotton yarn.

As an exporter of textile products, India has requested consultation with Indonesia as per provisions of the WTO’s Agreement on Safeguards to review and exchange views on the extension of the measure.
