Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri has issued a pointed message ahead of Pakistan’s IMF loan review, stating that the country’s track record on terrorism should be “well known” to those who “generously open up their pockets” to bail it out.He urged IMF board members to “look within and study the facts” before extending further assistance. India’s Executive Director at the IMF, Parameswaran Iyer, is expected to present India’s case during the board meeting, scheduled for May 9 as part of the Extended Fund Facility (EFF).
In the wake of heightened tensions following the Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 tourists, ongoing ceasefire violations along the Line of Control, and now Operation Sindoor, India is expected to strongly oppose and vote against the proposed $2 billion aid package to Pakistan.
The IMF had, on March 25, announced a staff-level agreement with Pakistan under a new 28-month Resilience and Sustainability Facility (RSF), granting Islamabad access to $1.3 billion.
Simultaneously, the board is set to conduct the first review of Pakistan’s ongoing 37-month Extended Fund Facility (EFF), which would release $1 billion in aid upon approval.Combined, the disbursements are expected to total approximately $2 billion.

The likely opposition comes in the wake of India’s Operation Sindoor, a precision strike on terror infrastructure across Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoK) in the early hours of Wednesday, May 7.
Nine terror sites were targeted in the strikes. The development comes in response to the Pahalgam terrorist attack in which 25 Indians and one Nepali citizen were killed.
Now, it remains to be seen what unfolds in the meeting on May 9.
