The sources underscored that there is a strong desire on the part of India and the US to fast-track trade negotiations, which were essentially stalled after Donald Trump imposed a 50% tariff on Indian goods entering the United States.
Earlier, Donald Trump, in the aforementioned Truth Social post, said, “I am pleased to announce that India and the United States of America are continuing negotiations to address the Trade Barriers between our two Nations.”
Focusing on his equation with PM Modi, he further added, “I look forward to speaking with my very good friend, Prime Minister Modi, in the upcoming weeks. I feel certain that there will be no difficulty in coming to a successful conclusion for both of our Great Countries!”In July, in his first comment on the matter, in another Truth Social post, Truth accused India of charging high tariffs and essentially funding the war in Ukraine. The post read, “Remember, while India is our friend, we have, over the years, done relatively little business with them because their Tariffs are far too high, among the highest in the World, and they have the most strenuous and obnoxious non-monetary Trade Barriers of any Country. Also, they have always bought a vast majority of their military equipment from Russia, and are Russia’s largest buyer of ENERGY, along with China, at a time when everyone wants Russia to STOP THE KILLING IN UKRAINE — ALL THINGS NOT GOOD! INDIA WILL THEREFORE BE PAYING A TARIFF OF 25%, PLUS A PENALTY FOR THE ABOVE, STARTING ON AUGUST FIRST. ”
PM Modi reciprocated to Donald Trump’s post. Modi took to X to add his response. In the post, he said, “India and the US are close friends and natural partners. I am confident that our trade negotiations will pave the way for unlocking the limitless potential of the India-US partnership.”
