Indian government offering all possible assistance to Nimisha Priya’s family, says MEA

Date:

The government has been providing all possible assistance to the family of the Kerala nurse Nimisha Priya to prevent her execution in Yemen, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on Thursday, July 17.”This is a very sensitive matter and the government of India has been offering all possible assistance in the case. We have provided legal assistance and also appointed a lawyer to assist the family, ” MEA Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal told reporters at a press briefing.
“We have also arranged for regular consular visits by her family and we are also in touch with the local authorities as also the family members to resolve this issue,” he added.
Nimisha Priya has been convicted of murder of a Yemeni national Talal Abdo Mahdi in 2017. He was her business partner who started to torture and sexually assault her. He also confiscated her passport. In order to escape, Nimisha tried to inject Mahdi with sedatives but the man died of an overdose.

The government sought more time for the family to reach a mutual situation. “This included concerted efforts in the last few days to seek more time for the family of Nimisha Priya to reach a mutually agreeable solution with the other party,” Jaiswal said. The Yemen government postponed Priya’s execution and death sentence which was scheduled for July 16. “We continue to closely follow the matter and render all possible assistance in the case. We are also in touch with some friendly governments in this regard,” Jaiswal stated.

The official however did not provide the details on the role of Yemeni Sheikh Abubakr Ahmad who is reportedly being held responsible for the postponement of Nimisha’s execution after having discussion with India’s Grand Mufti.

“I have no information to share,” Jaiswal said.

Nimisha was sentenced for capital punishment in 2018. Her appeals in 2020 and 2023 were rejected. In 2024, the Yemeni president had signed her death sentence.

The family has been trying to convince the deceased man’s family to accept blood money but they have refused to do so and has called for her retribution.
