Indian woman executed in UAE for infant’s murder, MEA confirms

Date:

An Indian woman from Uttar Pradesh, who was sentenced to death in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for the murder of a four-month-old child, was executed on February 15, the Union government informed the Delhi High Court on Monday, March 3.The woman, identified as Shahzadi, was convicted on July 31, 2023, and her death sentence was upheld by an appellate court. She was incarcerated at Al Wathba Central Jail before her execution.

Additional Solicitor General (ASG) Chetan Sharma informed Justice Sachin Datta that her last rites are scheduled for March 5, and arrangements are being made for her family members to travel to Abu Dhabi, reported LIVE LAW.

“Very unfortunate,” the court remarked upon hearing the development.
The High Court was hearing a petition filed by Shahzadi’s father, who sought updates on his daughter’s legal status and well-being. According to the petition, she had travelled to Abu Dhabi in 2022 on a work visa and was employed as a caregiver for a woman who had recently given birth. After the infant’s death, a video surfaced in which Shahzadi was allegedly seen confessing to the crime. Her appeal against the death sentence was dismissed on February 28, 2024.

The petition stated that on February 14, Shahzadi called her father, informing him of an intra-facility transfer and suggesting that this might be her last communication.

Following this, he sought information from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) regarding her legal status, but after receiving no response, he approached the High Court.

The MEA later confirmed that UAE authorities had officially informed the Indian Embassy on February 28, 2025, that Shahzadi’s sentence had been carried out in accordance with local laws.
