India’s BrahMos strikes derailed Pakistan’s planned military offensive, says Pak PM Shehbaz Sharif

Date:

Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has acknowledged that Indian forces struck key military installations inside Pakistan in the early hours of May 10, thwarting a planned offensive by the Pakistani army.Speaking at the Pakistan-Turkey-Azerbaijan trilateral summit held in Lachin, Azerbaijan, Sharif stated that Indian BrahMos missiles hit several strategic locations, including Rawalpindi airport, just hours before Pakistan intended to launch an attack.
“On the night of May 9-10, we decided to respond in a measured fashion to Indian aggression. Our armed forces were prepared to act at 4.30 in the morning after Fajr prayers to teach a lesson. But before that hour even arrived, India once again launched a missile attack using BrahMos, targeting various provinces of Pakistan, including the airport in Rawalpindi,” Sharif said during the summit address, as per News18.
He added that key military bases, including Noor Khan airbase in Rawalpindi and Murid base in Chakwal were struck by India before Pakistan could act, reported News18.

Operation Sindoor and terror targets

The Indian missile attack was part of a broader retaliatory operation called “Operation Sindoor” launched in the early hours of May 7 in response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 people.

Indian Armed Forces carried out precision strikes on nine terror base camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). These included sites associated with groups such as Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), and Hizbul Mujahideen.

Sharif’s admission to loss, offer to hold talks with India

The Pak PM had confirmed recently during a ceremony in Islamabad that Indian missiles struck around 2:30 am on May 10. “General Asif Munir called me through a secure phone and told me India has launched its ballistic missiles. One has landed at the Nur Khan airbase and some at other areas,” he said, as per NDTV.

Earlier this week, Sharif indicated Pakistan’s willingness to resume dialogue with India on the longstanding issues such as Kashmir, trade and water-sharing.

However, the India has reiterated its position that meaningful talks cannot occur unless Pakistan halts cross-border terrorism.

“Our position in regard to engagement with Pakistan has been clear and consistent. Any India Pakistan engagement has to be bilateral. At the same time, we are clear that talks and terror don’t go together,” External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said on Thursday, May 29 during his weekly press briefing.

“On terrorism itself, we are open to discussing the handing over to India of noted terrorists, whose list was given to Pakistan some years ago. Any bilateral discussion on Jammu and Kashmir will only be on the vacation of the illegally occupied Indian territory by Pakistan,” he added.

Escalation and ceasefire ‘understanding’

Following the Indian strikes on May 7, Pakistan responded by targeting Indian cities using drones and missiles. However, Indian air defence systems, including the S-400 and Akash, intercepted these attacks.

India then launched further strikes on Pakistani military assets including command centres and ammunition depots in regions such as Rahil Yar Khan, Sukkur and Sialkot, as per NDTV.

On May 10, a ceasefire understanding was reached after Pakistan’s Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) contacted his Indian counterpart, which resulted in cessation of all firings and military activities from both the sides.
