As talks intensify between New Delhi and Washington over a proposed Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA), Indian government sources have confirmed to CNBC-TV18 that a high-level delegation, led by Chief Trade Negotiator Rajesh Agrawal, has reached the United States to resume discussions. Both countries are aiming to conclude an interim deal before July 9 to prevent a reversion to higher tariff levels. However, key sticking points remain. The US is pressing for lower import duties on its agricultural and dairy products and seeking broader access for genetically modified (GM) crops.India, while open to furthering market access discussions, remains unwilling for any compromise on GM crops or sweeping entry for American dairy and agri goods. “There won’t be any compromise on national interests,” a senior official reiterated. If an agreement is not reached by July 9, tariffs could revert to the pre-April 2 levels, potentially affecting trade flows. At stake is the reinstatement of 26% reciprocal tariffs. Also Read: US insists, India resists lower duties on agricultural, dairy, and GM produce: Govt sourcesEarlier, during technical discussions held in New Delhi between June 4 and 10, progress was made across several areas including digital trade, Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures (SPS), Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT), customs and trade facilitation, and legal frameworks.
