India may witness the current year’s peak power demand in September this year courtesy the early onset of monsoon and pre-monsoon rains during summers, as per government sources.Stating that an early monsoon and pre-monsoon rains had kept temperatures low and the power demand from peaking, government sources pointed out that it was too early to say that India won’t reach its peak projected power demand of 277 MW in the current calendar year.
Currently, peak power demand has remained between 240 GW and 245 GW this year.
Likening the situation to 2023 when the calendar year’s peak power demand was witnessed in September, government sources said that the wind and the solar industry have been asked to install local weather stations at their installations to help project power demand better as well as keep the grid stable.Speaking at the India Energy Storage Week 2025 in New Delhi, Power Minister Manohar Lal Khattar said that renewable energy is slated to cross 50% of total energy mix in India this year, 5 years ahead of India’s commitment for a Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) at the UNFCCC (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change). Also Read: Here’s why shares of IEX surged over 5% on Wednesday(Edited by : Poonam Behura)First Published: Jul 9, 2025 3:26 PM IST
