North Korea suffered a “serious accident” during the launch ceremony for a new destroyer on Wednesday, an event that was overseen by leader Kim Jong Un, the state-run Korean Central News Agency said. The incident occurred due to “inexperienced command and operational carelessness” resulting in some sections of the warship’s keel being destroyed, with the bow unable to exit the shipway, the KCNA report said Thursday.
Kim vowed to deal with those accountable for the “irresponsible errors” at the plenary meeting of the Party Central Committee to be convened next month, and he ordered that repairs on the warship be completed before June.
Last month, Kim unveiled a new 5,000-tonne destroyer, proclaiming it a significant advance toward his goal of expanding the operational range and preemptive strike capabilities of his nuclear-armed military.Kim said the arms buildup was a response to perceived threats from the United States and its allies in Asia, who have been expanding joint military exercises amid rising tensions over the North’s nuclear program. He added that the acquisition of a nuclear-powered submarine would be his next big step in strengthening his navy.
