Kishtwar cloudburst: Death toll rises to 64, rescue operation enters sixth day in J&K’s Chisoti

The death toll increased to 64 in Jammu and Kashmir’s Chisoti on Tuesday, August 19, after a woman’s body was recovered by the authorities as the rescue operation in cloudburst hit Kishtwar district entered the sixth day.According to the officials, the decomposed body of the woman was found downstream in the morning, reported news agency PTI.The search operation has intensified in the region due to improvement in the weather conditions on August 19.

The flash floods triggered by a cloudburst in Chisoti has left the remote village to ruins as several houses and infrastructure including the roads and buildings have been damaged.As of August 18, about 167 people were rescued while 39 remained missing.Teams of the Indian Army and J&K Police along with National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), J&K’s State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), CISF, BRO, and civil authorities are engaged in the rescue efforts.Sniffer dogs have also been deployed in the rescue operations.

A cloudburst in Kathua claimed at least seven lives and left about 11 others injured.The injured individuals have been admitted to local hospital for medical treatment.IMD’s alerts for rainfall in J&KThe India Meteorological Department (IMD)’s Srinagar centre has predicted widespread light to moderate rain and thunderstorm over Jammu & Kashmir on August 19 and next few days.In Kashmir division, a yellow alert has been placed by IMD with predictions of isolated thunderstorm and lightning with gusty winds on August 19.In Jammu division, IMD has issued an orange alert and forecast isolated thunderstorm or lightning with strong winds, along with landslides and flash floods at vulnerable places.In both Kishtwar and Kathua districts, the weather agency has predicted rainfall from 2.5 to 15.5 mm of range.
