Kremlin hits back on Trump, says countries will decide Russian energy purchase themselves

Date:

The Kremlin said its partner countries will make their own decision on purchasing Russian energy in response to US President Donald Trump’s calls to stop purchases.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Tuesday, October 28, that the Kremlin has taken note of Trump’s statement pressuring countries to stop purchasing Russian energy.

“Our partners will make up their own mind about whether or not to buy top quality Russian energy products at a good price,” Reuters reported Peskov as  saying. “Many say they will figure it out for themselves.”

On the same day, spokesperson of Russia’s foreign ministry said that exerting pressure on Russia “achieves nothing”.

The Trump administration last week announced sanctions on two major Russian oil corporations–Rosneft and Lukoil–to pressure Putin into ending the war in Ukraine.

Lukoil PJSC, Russia’s second-largest oil producer and one of the two sanctioned, has already begun the divestment process and is in the process of considering bids to sell off its international assets, Bloomberg reported.

Impacts of Trump’s latest efforts to isolate and choke Russia from the world economy are felt in India as well. Many Indian oil companies are looking to reduce Russian oil imports.

The US had also imposed 50% tariff on Indian goods which includes a 25% tariff for buying Russian oil and defence products.
