KTM 990 RC R Breaks Cover: KTM has officially unveiled the 2026 KTM 990 RC R, marking the brand’s strong return to the large-capacity supersport segment. The new model promises street thrill and track performance in equal measure. Designed for both daily usability and racing precision, the 990 RC R establishes a new platform in KTM’s sport lineup.
Years In The Making: The 990 RC R extends the legacy of KTM’s RC range, developed over years with research and aerodynamic input from KTM’s motorsport programs. Built and assembled in Austria, it features a purpose-built steel chassis with a diecast aluminium subframe. This setup enhances front-end stiffness for stability under acceleration while maintaining agility for quick directional changes on road and track.
Power And Performance: At its core lies a 947cc Euro 5+ compliant LC8c parallel-twin engine weighing 57kg. The motor produces 130PS and 103Nm of torque, tuned for strong mid-range and top-end performance. KTM says this retuned version of the 990 Duke engine improves throttle response and overall smoothness, giving the 990 RC R an ideal balance between road usability and race readiness.
Track-Ready Hardware: Hardware highlights include twin 320mm Brembo four-piston HyPure front brakes and WP Apex fully adjustable suspension. The aluminium swingarm adds strength and lightness. A six-axis IMU supports systems like traction control, wheelie control, and launch control, ensuring both safety and performance.
Smart Tech Package: The motorcycle features an 8.8-inch TFT display with smartphone connectivity and detailed race telemetry. Standard ride modes include Rain, Street, Sport, and Custom. Optional Track and additional Custom modes further refine control. Four ABS settings — Street, Sport, Supermoto, and Supermoto+ — allow riders to tailor braking behaviour.
Aerodynamics And Design: Aerodynamically shaped bodywork with integrated winglets improves downforce and high-speed stability. The tall tail section gives the bike a sharp, racing-inspired look. The 990 RC R embodies KTM’s aggressive design language while remaining functional for long rides. The model is available in signature orange and black colour options.
Comfort And Ergonomics: KTM has fine-tuned the ergonomics for both aggressive and extended riding. The six-point contact patch supports knees, arms, and hands, reducing fatigue. Adjustable footrests allow accommodation for riders of various heights. Weight-saving across components and a 16-litre fuel tank enhance practicality and range.
Return To Supersport: The 990 RC R revives KTM’s presence in the supersport category after discontinuing the RC8 in 2015. This model now serves as the RC8’s spiritual successor, offering road legality unlike the track-only RC 8C. KTM positions it between road-friendly sportbikes and full-fledged race machines, making it suitable for enthusiasts seeking excitement and everyday functionality.
Production And Launch: Production of the KTM 990 RC R begins in October 2025, transitioning it to the 2026 model year after earlier delays caused by KTM’s financial restructuring. The motorcycle is priced at $13,949 (approximately ₹12.38 lakh) in the United States. A track-focused variant will debut in February 2026, featuring revised electronics, reduced weight, and race-optimised hardware.
Market Outlook: The KTM 990 RC R is unlikely to be launched in India due to limited demand for large-capacity sportbikes. Global competitors include the Kawasaki ZX-6R, Ducati Panigale V2, Yamaha R9, and Honda CBR600RR.
