The OpenAI chief also disclosed that the company plans to open its first India office in the latter part of the year 2025, as ChatGPT adoption rises in the South Asian nation.
“We are opening our first office in India later this year! And I’m looking forward to visiting next month,” said Sam Altman in his post.
Sam Altman said that the company’s flagship AI product, ChatGPT, has witnessed a 4x rise in its user base over the last year in India, and that is one of the reasons the company is ‘excited’ to expand its operations in India.
“AI adoption in India has been amazing to watch — ChatGPT users grew 4x in the past year–and we are excited to invest much more in India!” said Altman.
OpenAI’s India Office Plans
Mint reported earlier on Friday that OpenAI has confirmed its plans to open its first-ever office in India and take other measures to better serve its users in the South Asian nation.
According to the news report, the OpenAI team in the upcoming India office will work closely on strengthening its relationships with local partners, governments, businesses, developers, and academic institutions.
The company also disclosed that India is the second-largest market for ChatGPT, as the AI firm recorded a fourfold increase in the AI chatbot users in the last one-year period.
“The level of excitement and opportunity for AI in India is incredible. India has all the ingredients to become a global AI leader—amazing tech talent, a world-class developer ecosystem, and strong government support through the IndiaAI Mission. Opening our first office and building a local team is an important first step in our commitment to make advanced AI more accessible across the country and to build AI for India, and with India,” said CEO Sam Altman, according to the official release cited in the news report.
Amid the India office launch plans, OpenAI had also launched an India-specific ChatGPT Go plan at a rate of ₹399, with the aim of increasing affordability and getting a higher usage limit for its chatbot.
