Sunday marked the third day of demonstrations against Trump’s immigration crackdown in the region, as the arrival of around 300 federal troops spurred anger and fear among some residents. Some reports describe it as a ‘civil war’ like situation after the US government deployed the National Guard to stop the protestors. This is the first time since 1965 that the federal government has sent in troops without the state governor’s assent. Some police patrolled the streets on horseback while others with riot gear lined up behind Guard troops deployed to protect federal facilities including a detention center where some immigrants were taken in recent days. Police declared an unlawful assembly, and by early evening many people had left. Democrat leader and California governor called it a crisis ‘manufactured’ by US President Donald Trump. According to Newsom, Trump sending the national guard was ‘purposefully inflammatory’ and that the Federal government should rescind the ‘unlawful deployment of troops’ in California. The last time the National Guard was activated without a governor’s permission was in 1965, when President Lyndon B. Johnson sent troops to protect a civil rights march in Alabama, according to the Brennan Center for Justice. Facing mounting pressure from the White House, ICE has ramped up arrests in recent weeks, averaging about 2,000 detentions per day nationwide — still falling short of the administration’s goal of at least 3,000 daily arrests. The stepped-up enforcement is part of Trump’s vow to carry out the largest deportation campaign in US history. In the LA area, ICE reported 118 arrests this week, though the agency has not released updated figures as of Sunday morning, according to a Bloomberg report.
