Several countries such as India, Australia and New Zealand have evacuated their citizens and diplomats from Israel and Iran as the conflict in the West Asian region intensifies.
India evacuated around 110 people from Iran, who were first taken to Armenia before being flown to Qatar’s Doha. They were then flown to New Delhi in the early hours of June 19.
About 90 students from Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) will be taken to Kashmir in buses, CM Omar Abdullah said.
Around 1,500 Australians in Iran have registered for assistance, with another 1,200 Australians in Israel seeking to leave, Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong said on June 19, reported Reuters.
New Zealand’s Foreign Minister Winston Peters said New Zealand was doing all it could to help its citizens in the face of “very serious practical constraints”, and was providing advice on overland border exits.
New Zealand has temporarily closed its Tehran embassy and evacuated two staff and their family by land to Azerbaijan, he said, as per Reuters. “An opportunity arose overnight to get our embassy staff out of Iran, as part of a convoy alongside government officials from other countries,” he said.
As the war continues to ravage the Middle East, the death toll in Iran has reached to 639, with about 1,329 others being injures, as per a Washington based group Human Rights Activists.
