Over 73 Iranian women and children killed in Israeli airstrikes: Iran’s foreign ministry

Date:

At least 73 women and children have been killed in Tehran over the past three Israeli attacks, in what Esmaeil Baqaei, Spokesperson for the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, condemned as “routine barbarity” from its regional foe.

This includes 20 children killed in Chamran residential complex and another 10 that still remain trapped under rubble 48 hours after the attacks, the minister confirmed on the social media platform X.

Iran’s UN envoy, Amir Saeid Iravani, reported that at least 78 people — including senior military officials — were killed and 320 wounded when Israel initiated airstrikes on Friday, June 13.

Israel had caught Iran by surprise when it attacked Tehran and other cities, targeting their nuclear programme and key military installations in the early hours of Friday. Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei and other leaders then confirmed several commanders and scientists were killed in the attack and promised to retaliate harshly.

In its fourth day of continued warfare since then, Israeli emergency services on Monday, June 16, reported three dead and dozens wounded in a new wave of missile attacks from Iran, according to AP. The latest casualties bring Israel’s death toll to 17, according to the Magen David Adom rescue service.

Among the dead were two women and one man, all in their 70s, in the Israeli city of Petah Tikva near Tel Aviv, killed during a barrage of around 100 missiles launched by Iran.

Amidst escalating tension, US President Donald Trump said on Sunday, June 15, that he is brokering to bring peace in the region. “We will have PEACE, soon, between Israel and Iran! Many calls and meetings now taking place,” he wrote on his social media platform, Truth Social.

On the day of the initial attack on June 13, Trump warned Iran to strike a deal “before it is too late.”

“I told them it would be much worse than anything they know, anticipated, or were told, that the United States makes the best and most lethal military equipment anywhere in the World, BY FAR, and that Israel has a lot of it, with much more to come – And they know how to use it,” he posted.
