Pahalgam terror attack aftermaths: UN Chief calls Jaishankar, Pak PM urging de-escalation of tensions

Date:

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres held separate phone calls with India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday, April 29, following the deadly terrorist attack in Pahalgam. Guterres has urged India and Pakistan to exercise maximum restraint and pursue peaceful resolutions amid rising tensions.

The attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Baisaran valley claimed 26 lives on April 22, and has drawn widespread condemnation and prompted diplomatic responses from both countries.
During the conversation, Guterres reiterated his “strong condemnation” of the attack and stressed the “importance of pursuing justice and accountability of these attacks through lawful means,” as per UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric, reported PTI.Read more: PM Modi to chair Cabinet meeting amid rising tensions following Pahalgam terror attack

Jaishankar, in a post on X (formerly Twitter), acknowledged the conversation and said, “Appreciate his unequivocal condemnation of the terrorist attack in Pahalgam. Agreed on the importance of accountability. India is resolved that the perpetrators, planners and backers of this attack are brought to justice.”

Guterres offers to mediate amid concerns

The Secretary-General expressed “deep concern at rising tensions between India and Pakistan” and warned the risk of a confrontation with “tragic consequences,” Dujarric said at a UN press briefing.

Guterres offered his “good offices to support any de-escalation efforts,” he added.

Meanwhile, Pak PM Sharif, reaffirmed Pakistan’s “condemnation of terrorism in all its forms” but rejected what he described as “baseless Indian accusations.”

UNGA president calls for restraint

Philemon Yang, President of the 79th UN General Assembly, echoed concerns of Guterres.

In a statement shared by the Office of the President of the General Assembly, spokesperson Sharon Birch said that Yang is “deeply concerned by the escalation of violence” and stressed that “the targeting of civilians is unacceptable and cannot be justified under any circumstances,” reported PTI.

Yang also urged both sides to resolve the situation through diplomatic means.
