Pakistan’s oppressive approach and illegal occupation of PoK reason for protests, says MEA

Date:

India’s Ministry of External Affairs on Friday, October 3, said that protests in several areas of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) are a “natural” consequence of Pakistan’s oppressive approach in these territories.”We have seen reports on protests in several areas of Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir, including brutalities by Pakistani forces on innocent civilians,” Randhir Jaiswal, Official Spokesperson of the MEA said at a press briefing in New Delhi.

“We believe that it is a natural consequence of Pakistan’s oppressive approach and systemic plundering of resources from these territories, which remain under its forcible and illegal occupation,” he added.

The official further called for holding Pakistan accountable for the human rights violations happening on its soil.”Pakistan must be held accountable for its horrific human rights violations,” Jaiswal said.

The MEA spokesperson also confirmed India’s position on the territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh by stating that these regions are an “integral part of India” and will remain the same way forever.

The ongoing unrest in PoK

The remarks come when the PoK region is witnessing one of the largest waves of protest in recent years. Thousands of locals across regions such as Muzaffarabad, Mirpur, Rawalkot, Neelum Valley, and Kotly staged protests after discussions between Pakistani authorities and the Awami Action Committee (AAC), which is a coalition of civil groups, lawyers, and traders, did not result into an agreement.

“Our campaign is not against any institution but for the fundamental rights denied to our people for over 70 years. Enough is enough,” AAC leader Shaukat Nawaz Mir said, as per News18.

The Pakistani forces opened fire and resorted to military crackdown on the protestors, leading to several deaths and leaving dozens of demonstrators injured, as per local reports.

Daily life in the region remains severely affected as markets stay closed, and public transport is hit. Security in the region has been increased heavily and detentions are being done on a widespread level.

The protestors demand tax cuts for traders, better education institutions and facilities, job opportunities for the local youth, along with fair farming policies among others.
