India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar will represent the country at the virtual summit that will take place at 4.30 pm IST on Monday (September 8).
The meeting is convened by this year’s host country, Brazil’s President Lula da Silva, to discuss tariffs imposed by the US and the need for a multilateral world order amidst the changing global political and economic landscape, according to the report.
China’s foreign ministry announced that President Xi will deliver an “important speech” at the summit that takes place just days after Beijing angered the US leader, Trump, with a huge display of political clout. Xi Jinping marched with Putin and North Korea’s Kim Jong Un at the community country’s grandest military parade marking the end of World War II.
Xi and Putin had skipped the BRICS Summit held at Brazil’s Rio de Janeiro, which PM Modi attended in July 2025. However, all three leaders met recently in China for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) earlier this month.
India had recently highlighted the need to diversify exports, reduce dependency, and build resilient supply chains at the SCO Trade Ministers’ meeting in Vladivostok last week.
Representing the Union Minister of Commerce & Industry, Additional Secretary with the Department of Commerce Amitabh Kumar emphasised the importance of coordinated action to enhance trade flows, address vulnerabilities, and support inclusive growth across the region amid steep tariffs from the US.
He underlined the role of services trade and the temporary movement of skilled professionals, in line with national laws and transparency, to strengthen economic growth and support greater participation of MSMEs in global value chains.
