PM Modi to Trump: India never discussed trade or mediation during Operation Sindoor

Date:

India never discussed trade or third party mediation during Operation Sindoor, Prime Minister Narendra Modi clarified with United States President Donald Trump on a phone call held between the two leaders, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said on Wednesday (June 18). This comes ahead of Trump’s meeting with Pakistan’s Army Chief Munir today in Washington.PM Modi told President Trump in a clear manner that after April 22, India had conveyed its decision to retaliate against the terrorism across the globe.
“India had targeted only terror base camp and sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (POK) in precise, measured and non-escalatory actions,” PM Modi told Trump, as per Misri.
On the night of May 9, US Vice President JD Vance called PM Modi and told him that Pakistan can retaliate against India in major attacks. The Prime Minister had told Vance that if that happens, India will retaliate with more befitting response. In the night of May 9-10, India conducted strikes that made Pak’s military bases inoperable, after which Pakistan had to urge for cessation of military actions.”PM Modi clarified to President Trump that there was no discussion on India-America trade deal or US mediation in the matter during this time. The cessation of military actions started on Pakistan’s request directly between the two countries,” Misri said in the video statement.

PM Modi stressed that India never accepted mediation, it does not accept it now, nor will it ever do that. On this issue, there is full political unanimity, Misri said.

Modi clarified that India does not look at terrorism as a form of “proxy war” anymore but as an “act of war” itself. Trump supported India’s stance against terrorism, and further asked PM Modi whether he can visit US after his Canadian visit. However, Modi declined due to prior engagements.

Both the leaders agreed to meet in the near future, and discussed the ongoing Israel-Iran war and Russia-Ukraine war.

Both the leaders appreciated QUAD’s role in the matters related to Indo-Pacific region. Trump accepted Modi’s invitation to the QUAD meeting that India is going to host.

PM Modi and Trump were scheduled to hold a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Canada’s Kananaskis. However, Trump had to cut short his visit and returned to US.

After this, on the request of President Trump, a phone call conversation happened with PM Modi on June 18, which lasted for about 35 minutes. Both the leaders had the last conversation on April 22 after Pahalgam terror attack.
