PM Modi’s Mauritius visit: Announces MAHASAGAR vision for Global South

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while addressing the joint press conference, said that he and Mauritius PM Navinchandra Ramgoolam have decided to declare India-Mauritius relations as “enhanced strategic partnership”.PM Modi and his counterpart have agreed on a number of matters related to defence partnership, maritime security, trade in local currency, among others. “Free, open, secure and safe Indian Ocean is our mutual priority. We are committed to cooperating in maintaining the safety of Mauritius’ exclusive economic zone,” PM Modi said.

Addressing the press conference on Wednesday, PM Modi said, “Be it the Global South, the Indian Ocean, or the African continent, Mauritius is our important partner. Ten years ago, the foundation stone of Vision SAGAR – ‘Security and Growth for All in the Region’ was laid here in Mauritius.”Speaking about taking the next step in the matter, he announced the vision for MAHASAGAR initiative – Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions. “For Global South our vision will be – MAHASAGAR. Under this, trade for development, capacity building for sustainable growth, and mutual security for shared future will be included,” PM Modi stated.

He said that support will be provided through technology sharing, concessional loans and grants. PM thanked the Mauritius PM and its citizens for the warm welcome that he received in the island state and invited PM Ramgoolam for a visit to India.

Prime Minister Modi arrived in Mauritius on Tuesday, March 11 for a two-day state visit to participate in its National Day Celebrations as a chief guest.

He was welcomed with “guard of honour” at the Port Louis airport. On his first day on the held bilateral talks with his counterpart and met Mauritius President Dharambeer Gokhool at the State House.

PM Modi was conferred with the Maritius’ highest civilian honour, The Grand Commander of the Order of the Star and Key of the Indian Ocean.
