Russia unleashes massive drone attack on Kyiv and Odesa, kills 1

Date:

Russia unleashed a sweeping drone attack on the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv and the Black Sea city of Odesa that left a trail of destruction and killed at least one person, local authorities said.In addition to the death, another three people were hospitalised in Odesa after a Russian drone hit an apartment building, Mayor Hennadiy Trukhanov said Tuesday on Telegram. Russian projectiles also destroyed a first aid station and damaged a maternity ward and other residential buildings in Odesa’s historic downtown, local authorities said.
In Kyiv, which is currently engulfed in fog from fires and the after-effects of shot-down projectiles, a fleet of Russian drones struck apartment buildings, a business center, a drug store and a warehouse, causing blazes in several districts, Mayor Vitali Klitschko said.
Loud explosions were heard for several hours across the capital, and at least one person was hospitalised, Klitschko said. The assault began shortly after midnight and was still unfolding almost five hours later. The attacks came as Russia and Ukraine are undertaking a major prisoner exchange following peace talks last week in Turkey. There’s been no progress toward negotiating an end to the war in recent talks, with Russia setting out maximalist demands and US President Donald Trump stepping back from calls for an immediate ceasefire.

“Russia lies every day about wanting peace — and every day it targets civilians,” Andriy Yermak, chief of staff to the Ukrainian president, said on the X platform. “It’s time to impose sanctions. It’s time to support Ukraine with weapons. It’s time to prove that democracy has strength.”

Russian drones and missiles also damaged residential houses and cars in the Kyiv region, local authorities said.
