Tripura Tourism Minister Sushanta Chowdhury announced on Saturday that the state government has begun the process of launching seaplane tourism at Narikel Kunja and Chhabimura in Gomati district, aiming to draw both domestic and international tourists.Narikel Kunja is a sprawling water body, while Chhabimura is renowned for its ancient rock carvings etched into steep cliffs along the banks of the Gomati River.
“The Tourism and Transport departments have jointly taken the initiative to introduce seaplanes which are capable of flying on water to attract domestic and foreign tourists. If the service is introduced, the tourists will be able to see the beauty of Narikel Kunja and Chhabimura in Gomati district,” the minister shared in a Facebook post.
Also read: Beware of online frauds targeting pilgrims, tourists: Govt issues alertChowdhury highlighted that seaplane tourism has become an appealing addition to travel experiences globally and has the potential to add a new dimension to Tripura’s tourism offerings.”If the service is introduced, it will not only bring a new experience to the tourists but also boost the local economy,” he added.The minister mentioned that he had conducted a virtual meeting with representatives of a seaplane service provider to assess the feasibility of the project, with senior government officials in attendance.In a related move to bolster tourism infrastructure, the state had previously signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Indian Hotels Ltd (IHL), part of the Tata Group, to convert the historic Pushpabanta Palace in Agartala into a luxury hotel.The Tata Group is set to invest ₹250 crore in the redevelopment, aiming to build 100 rooms within the heritage structure, which once hosted Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore during his visit to the region.(Edited by : Jerome Anthony)First Published: Apr 19, 2025 9:26 PM IST
