He asserted India and Singapore’s ‘Comprehensive Strategic Partnership’ between the two countries and said dialogue and cooperation in trade and defence have gained momentum in the past year.
Singapore PM and Minister for Finance Lawrence Wong is in India from September 2 to 4 for his maiden visit to the country since coming to power in May 2024.
During the official visit, India and Singapore drew a detailed roadmap to strengthen the partnership in areas like advanced manufacturing, green shipping, skilling, civil nuclear, and urban water management. Other areas of cooperation also include artificial intelligence (AI) and digital technologies.
The Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement and our Free Trade Agreement with ASEAN will be reviewed soon.
The two leaders also virtually inaugurated a container terminal in Maharashtra, a project in which the Port of Singapore Authority (PSA International) had invested over $1 billion.
“Today, in the South-East Asia region, Singapore is our largest trade partner. There has been a large-scale investment from Singapore in India. Our defence ties are continuously getting stronger. People-to-people relations are deep and vibrant,” Modi said.
Singapore continues to be India’s largest source of foreign direct investment (FDI) for the seventh consecutive year, with the highest inflows of about $15 billion in 2024-25.
PM Modi also thanked PM Wong and the Singapore government for extending solidarity towards India during the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22, 2025.
“We share common concerns about terrorism. We believe that it is the duty of all humanitarian countries to fight terrorism in solidarity,” Modi said.
